 Child Sponsorship FAQ

How long should my child sponsorship last?

Our Child Sponsorship Program offers you the opportunity to stay with a child for a number of years, usually through the school year in which the child reaches the age of 18 to 19.

While we hope that you will be able to continue your support of your sponsored child until he or she completes the program, we recognize that circumstances sometimes change. You may discontinue your child sponsorship at any time.

Please understand that a sponsored child’s circumstances may change, too. For example, sometimes families move beyond the reach of our program and children no longer have the opportunity to participate.

We will inform you as quickly as possible if any such circumstance affects the child you sponsor, and we’ll offer you the opportunity to support another child in need of your help.

How much does it cost to sponsor a child?

If you choose to sponsor a child, the cost is only $35 per month.

May I send gifts to my child?

We are sorry but at this time we do not offer this option. Due to the volatile nature of the village we do not want to promote ‘hand-outs’ and encourage ‘begging’. Sadly this culture has become too accustomed to relying on others and as a result created a system of begging on the streets. We want to do things different and help through education and self sustaining projects that find ways out of poverty instead of creating more reliance on outside visitors.

We do encourage handwritten letters to your child and we will have your child write back to you as often as we can arrange. Due to the remote nature of the village and difficulty in retrieving mail we are unable at this time to know how often letters will be provided.

Will I be the only person sponsoring the child I’m helping?

Yes. The child you’re helping has just one sponsor: you. That’s why your prayers, letters and support mean so much to your sponsored child. Even if you choose to sponsor a child as a family or a group (for example, a youth group or a Sunday school class), the child you help will still be relating to your family or group as his or her only sponsor.

What do I do if I am considering canceling my child sponsorship?

Please contact Sarah at Sarah@healingeyes.org. You may discontinue your sponsorship at any time.

Why choose Healing Eyes when there are so many other Child Sponsorship programs?

We are always working towards the best interest of the child and take this responsibility very seriously. We work from the ground up by finding the children who meet the following criteria: Orphaned, Disabled, HIV/AIDS victim. We hold Christian Beliefs and believe it is our purpose to help orphans and widows. By choosing Healing Eyes and sponsoring a child through us we can provide a closer relationship with your child, we also can let you know as soon as we find out any issues with the child, such as, health or specific pray requests your child may need.

What benefits does the child I sponsor receive?

This means providing the cost of school fees and in some cases a lunch. It also means encouragement and prayer support. In some cases Your sponsorship allows a child to go to boarding school.

Opportunity for medicine: The health clinics in Uganda are often short on medical supplies. You are helping us bring the medical attention needed for your child.

Opportunity to improve Self Esteem: You are noticing a child that was never seen before. Meaning your child will feel more confident and less ashamed of his circumstances and/or disability.

Opportunity to show God’s love to your child: Your child now knows what it means to be LOVED and cared for. We are able to share the love of Jesus Christ to your child by giving him hope.

A meal: Your child will be given a lunch during the school day consisting of beans and posha.

A uniform: It may seem small but a uniform can give self confidence and security to a child living in extreme poverty. The uniform shows others that the child belongs to a school and if he/she is lost can easily be brought back.

Compassion: Your child can finally know what compassion means. Growing up in poverty can make it difficult for a child to know what compassion and generosity is. You are making a difference in a child’s life by taking action and showing it through giving him/her an education.

Do I have to believe in a God and/or religion to sponsor a child?

No, we will never push our beliefs on you and we do not only allow Christians to sponsor a child. We believe God has given us a choice and it’s up to our own hearts to decide what we believe in. Compassion and Grace for others is what you are showing by taking this step forward and we believe that is what love is all about. Your child may believe in God and attend a Christian institution, we only ask that you show kindness to the child and allow him/her to walk in their faith.

How else can I learn about my child that I sponsor?

We are in contact communication with the village in Uganda and make every effort to pass on any information we receive. You are welcome to email us at sarah@healingeyes.org to pass on a message to your child and/or a photo you want to share. We are in this together and love the opportunity to connect you with a child looking for that extra love in their lives.

Will my child write me?

Yes, we will make every effort to have your child write letters. Please be aware that some of our children are still learning English and their native language is their primary way of communication. As your child grows and receives a better education their writing skills will improve. You will see first hand the difference you are making by communicating with them.
