Hello America..again

It’s so awesome to see how God is working and even growing Healing Eyes support family.

I am sitting here alone writing thank you notes to those who gave over the last 3 months either regularly or spontaneous one time gifts towards the mission. Some of the most amazing gifts were given while serving in Africa. By both donors and the people in Uganda we serve.

footWhile there I got sick more than half of the time but we still persevered through the trials we faced. The local people weren’t always the nicest and even cheated me a few times. The people who drink the local brew all day were oblivious to their children with numerous wounds, many wounds weeks old and highly infected.

meetingThe community was still indifferent to the project Pastor John was trying to do and were turning on him because they thought he was just being greedy and seeking land for himself. We pulled a community meeting together and cleared up some of the rumors going around about what I was doing there and what the project was. The project simply is to buy land, build a real primary school for orphans and disabled, build a small clinic, and build up a community of widows forgotten amidst the HIV epidemic that wiped out many families.

IMG_1630We also have planted the seeds for theology training with the local pastors by sitting down one hot afternoon to talk about T.U.L.I.P and Pre-destination.

Did we succeed? YES! the district leaders pressured a man to sell us land and to even explain to the villagers why this project will help them. The leaders pleaded to show me more kindness and to look after my safety while there. The widows met and hopefully will be starting up a small savings group to try and create their own loan network. The  kids were treated and have started to learn basic first aid. Lastly, I am over my stomach illness, ear infections, and diarrhea. Hallelujah!

Thank you for joining us on this story and praying for Healing Eyes and me. Please continue to follow the story as the rest of the year enfolds and I go back and forth between countries to raise money and awareness of how bad off most of the world is. Our monthly support is an encouragement when just a year ago it was about $50.

support

We still need more monthly partners as the need in Uganda grows and also, well, I need to start getting serious about how to feed myself and pay for gas and my car insurance. Eventually I will be in Uganda long term and its crucial to go with support of friends and family here to keep God’s work going over there.

Thank you again

Compassion changes lives

My hands are tied and as much as I want to be in America I need to be in Africa. Here we are used to instant replies to emails and constant communication over text and voice but in Africa it can get a bit sporadic. It’s frustrating when I need to see in person the status of the school and the kids but this means I have to Go.

Part of starting a non-profit and building a relationship with an entirely different culture is the patience opportunities and trust building exercises. Add to that the fact that many organizations misuse donated funds and donors are leery on trusting fledgling organizations I feel like I am up against impossible odds. When all I want to do is run over to Africa and see the kids and learn there stories but I can’t just do that when I have to play several different roles in keeping Healing Eyes alive and getting funds. All of this while grieving my dead husband and waking from a night full of nightmares and memories of my past that cause an aching stab in my heart. Meanwhile I know as much as I want to throw money at the problem in Africa it won’t fix anything because it all comes down to Compassion changing lives. Tricky part is we are in a ‘money’ society and so money can get the material needs necessary: food, education, medical. The hilarious part is in Africa they think I have money growing on trees but truthfully I don’t even have money coming in to support myself doing this.

Why am I even doing this?!

IMG_6875-0Because of faces like Phen and William and the realization that most of the world doesn’t have safe drinking water or food without feces in it which leads to an outbreak of Cholera (which is happening in Sironko district near Billah’s home). My eyes can’t close to what I have been shown….but I really want to erase what I have seen because it means, well it means I could go back to who I was even though that isn’t true either. Is this the battle of all missionaries? What happens when you are a widowed missionary?

What have I seen?

Imagine a place where kids are running around everywhere. Now imagine some are 9 years old and they are carrying another baby on there back, not there child but a random child. Now see a widow with nothing and with her husband gone she now has to carry on planting a crop in the hot sun for a harvest that will bring in little. She has let’s say 5 mouths to feed. Now put all of that in a culture where men have more authority and where even the men make barely anything for income. This isn’t woman’s rights outcry but basic human needs outcry.

IMG_1935Now imagine a 8 year old girl with a burned wrist and she has to listen to the pharmacist explain dosage and takes the medicine, she is now responsible for everything said and taking the pills and applying the cream. Oh and she also has to continue with chores which include: chickens, babysitting, cooking, bathing, collecting firewood, farming, and school work. All of this in the hot sun, flies swarming, animal feces, and little drinking water. This will truly bring up a resilient young lady who is humble and quiet but if she never sees who God is through Action than it might result in a child lacking emotions, feelings, empathy, compassion, and incapable of sustaining healthy relationships.  All because she was taught only to fend for her materials needs in a harsh world lacking any understanding of compassion and love.

How can I keep being Compassion in Action? …..
With support from You!

Keep your eyes on Me

Why are you afraid my child? You put too much worry on the storm ahead and problems you see approaching at all turns. Keep you eyes on Me and not on the fears you perceive. Have I not taken you this far and accomplished so much in only a year of giving your trust over to Me? Oh you of little faith….Open your eyes and see what’s coming your way! It is a beautiful and frightful sight to behold but with each step and obstacle removed it will become clearer and you go along.

March 13… it’s coming… are You ready?

Healing Eyes

But its not how I imagined it

Often we complain about a life we wish we had and do everything the opposite of what God had in mind.  We ask Him to fix our lives and do this and that, but maybe all along he is trying to help but we refuse because its not done the way we think it should be. This is what I have been asking for. A life that’s full of adventure, travel, and not spent in routine each day. I’ve asked him to send me to Africa and to move the pieces of my life around to accomplish this goal. I want to help widows and orphans, build something larger than myself and comfort others in pain. To use my loss to further His plans for me. I think it was about a year ago when I started praying for that.

Since that time I have been to Africa 4 times, found a village with widows and orphans, been connected with people in Africa that can be touch-points over there, and He even answered my prayer about a place to live in Michigan while I am going in between countries. So if I lay out all the pieces it seems God has been answering prayers and quite sneakily moving the pieces around to accomplish my first said wish which was to be in Africa.

Human nature then kicks in and I regret my first request because to continue this mission it means sacrificing my comforts and my ideas. Now logically if I really trusted God I wouldn’t even worry about making sacrifices because it ultimately accomplishes the request to be in Africa and live a life of adventure and un-normal existence.  So why am I so conflicted?

It all comes down to TRUST! Do I trust Him to take care of me in a remote country where the danger level goes up and my comfort level goes down? Safety net gone along a very skinny tightrope. Will he catch me?

That’s the gamble in my human brain. But all shouldn’t matter when my soul will live on even after this short time on earth and why not live it to the extreme?! Why settle for less than what I want.

Merry Christmas and Thank You for Praying

As I find myself in a bit of transition again I think how blessed I am. This past year has been very eventful with 3 successful trips to Africa and real direction for Healing Eyes I finish off the year with 1 more trip to Africa. The season is changing and snow is coming and I am thankful for everyone who has prayed for me, supported me financially, and been an encouragement to me during my grief and upheaval in life. The non-profit is gaining momentum and I can’t deny God behind it all even when I begin to doubt.

So what have we accomplished this year?

Started a relationship with a pastor in Manafwa District (Eastern Uganda near Kenya) who has a school for impoverished children.Started the first steps towards surveying 2 acres of land in order to build a real school building and develop the community.Helped bring 5 kids the gift of education by either sending them to an established boarding school and/or seeing to there immediate physical needs through support from individuals in Michigan.Strengthened our board of directorsConnected with new churches in Western Michigan

So what do we plan for 2016?

Live in Africa for 4 months starting in March.Start a pig farm to support widows and orphans in Eastern Uganda.Grow our partners to build a primary age school.Find resources to build a library and develop a discipleship program for local pastors.Start a bible study for widows in Eastern Uganda and be God's hands and feet through compassion.Find sponsors for the 199 children attending Buweboya vision junior school.

What does You helping really do this Giving Tuesday

It’s just great to see the progress of our new page called ‘Our Kids’. Sometimes you have to start somewhere and we are starting one little heart at a time with our kids in Uganda. We are a little charity with Big dreams to impact the flavor of the world and show compassion to those we find. Right now we have around 185 kids to care for and if you check out our new Our Kids page you can see some of them so far. So take a minute and peak at a few of the Most Needy kids. Check back often as I am updating it regularly and adding more kids and info on each of them.

As we start to get up and running we will be changing and improving as we go along. It’s pretty exciting seeing a dream come to reality.

We know it’s hard to gain trust and build relationships in life which is why we go for transparency with your donations. Right now 100% goes directly to the ministry. What does this mean? Well we have no employees yet and we have no overhead of a building. So when you give $35 a month or one time gift, that all goes to the ministry. Honestly at some point as we grow Sarah (the founder) will need a payroll as you can’t eat fake food in America but for now we put all the money back to the kids, widows, and those we find in Africa that are in need of a bit of compassion. While I am in Africa I use your money to get from village to village and find the kids with either a physical injury or an emotional need and act immediately to provide help. While in Africa there is lodging, transportation, and food to keep me going in order to find each child… and your donation helps keep me going.

If You tell me You want the donation to go to a specific fund I will honor that request (Unrestricted One Time Gift, Building Fund, Sponsor a Child)

This Tuesday is #GivingTuesday for charities and I hope you will think of us and our dream to bring compassion to orphans and widows.

Possibilities of what we can do together

It’s my hope to share with all of you the little moments spent with children in Africa so that you can imagine how much it helps to just ‘Be’ in the presence of others. We are a small charity but with your help we can help many. First we want to at least get some school fees paid and perhaps a school uniform for those that couldn’t afford one because it raises self esteem. When I go back in December we might even start a pig farm to help the people living there support themselves and the school they hope to build because it’s the right thing to do. Imagine what you could do with a little dose of Possibilities! With one step forward you can partner with us to make sure each child gets that firm hug and eye contact to know compassion is real because deep down all we need is a hug some days.

Say hello to Sarah

You know your on the right path when you hear the word Free

Can you believe that today I had my own little miracle happen? God takes care of widows and today after spending almost 3 hours at the mechanic to get my oil changed he worked his magic. Free! the $40 it was supposed to cost was on the house today because they took forever trying to find an oil filter for my car. But wait! It doesn’t stop there! My next visit is free too!

So I have no income and give away what little bit of money I do have, but at least my oil change was taken care of today and tomorrow:)

My salary is paid with long waits of patience opportunities and unconventional ways of supplementing a ‘normal’ income. Yea it’s not the most comfortable or risk free way of living but it beats paying $40 I didn’t have today for routine car maintenance at a place I hadn’t visited since Andy died. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?! Perhaps my utility bills will randomly get lost in the system.

Fundraising Goal a bit more God size

My post from yesterday launching the new Goal for Fundraising generated a blessing of a comment. As a result I am fixing my typo of $5,000 and upping it to the $45,000 I knew was needed for Phase 1 of Building a school.

I’m not sure if this is from me or from the Lord, but I feel like you should ask for more..this sounds strange sorry! But girl, some verse came to mind, Enlarge your Tents, strengthen your chords, He is doing a NEW thing! I think even bigger and greater than you can see right now. You’re gonna need more money girl. But be JOYFUL in this! Not fearful or overwhelmed.

After Andy died I flipped my bible open to Isaiah 54 which talked about a barren woman being blessed with children. This spurred hope in me and has continued to this day. Now a person I’ve met only once comments on my blog about ‘Enlarging my tent, strengthening my cords’, straight from that same verse.

So Bring it on! Let’s see what a mustard seed of faith can do and move a mountain. I bet before December 11 when I fly back to Uganda God can get at least the $5,000 raised.

Healing Eyes clear Goal:

  • 1 building with 4 classrooms
  • Toilets (4 latrines)
  • 1 Borehole
  • 2 acres of land
