Emma is growing up

This is part of the job that makes the struggle worth it!

A little over a year ago I met Emma and his mother and to see the transformation take place in this boy’s smile and demeanor is completely God’s hand at work. This is exactly why we should take notice of the suffering half way around the world.

Emma is partially deaf and was thought to be dumb. When we met him he was sitting on the ground with kids half his age all around him in a kindergarten class. He didn’t hear well or follow the teacher and so everyone just thought he was dumb because he was different. Through the help of a friend in St. Croix we were able to move him to a school for the deaf and then just recently we moved him to a school with kids of various degrees of deafness and/or special needs and he’s really blossoming. Emma has a new sponsor now in Michigan and we are excited to see what the new school year will bring. Each update warms my heart and shows progress amidst so much struggle to move a few feet forward.

If you have been thinking of sponsoring but needed another reason to say yes I hope this can show the affect your giving can have in lives so far removed from our own. See our Kids here.

It’s overwhelming to look at the tremendous need and quantity of kids, even the painful task of choosing who is more needy then the other is daunting but I’ve learned God has a child in mind for everyone.

Sometimes that child comes into our life in strange ways but comes nevertheless.

Smiling Again

It’s easy to get overwhelmed in the details of trying to save everyone. But a photo like this one of our boy Emma smiling at his boarding school melts the heart and reassures us we can make a difference. Many of you know the last 3 months have been difficult on a personal level since coming back to the states from Africa. A cancer diagnosis was a complete surprise and nearly stopped everything we started with Healing Eyes. We had just bought land in Africa and were feeling good about our progress and out of no where comes cancer again. Now only 2.5 months post surgery the feelings of Africa are slowly returning, like a slow ache forgotten for awhile but still persisting. Being detached from that day to day suffering makes it easy to NOT go back, but instead, turn my thoughts inward to protect myself becomes very attractive. It feels like I have earned some selfishness because of cancer….and yet…there still is that persistent ache I can’t shake.

IMG_0865This recent photo (only 2 days ago) says a lot because over time I have learned doing a little NOW can reap rewards LATER. Emma was placed in a boarding school for the deaf last year and while there he got a terrible abscess under his armpit that had to be cut out. But then he recovered and we moved him to another school closer to his village that also deals with deaf kids. He has partial hearing but because of his disability he can’t thrive in a government school or Buweboya vision junior school, we just aren’t equipped for teaching kids with disabilities. We don’t even have a real building yet at Buweboya. The point is we did take the step and over time Emma is smiling more. In the end I hope that is enough….to cheer up a child today.

Our Simon needs You

Simon is about 15 years old and attends Buweboya Vision Junior School. If you ever wanted to meet a boy with potential than this will amaze you. He walks miles to school each day, through a swamp and rocky terrain under a searing hot sun. During holiday breaks he will walk miles to get tutoring by a few teachers in the village. His mother is gone and is father is dead, due to suspicious circumstances surrounding his mother leaving. This boy just doesn’t give up! He is soft spoken but if you give him the attention he craves he will open up to you and reveal a very intelligent young man desperate for an education. I would like to say that our school is established enough to give a good education but right now with no building and volunteer teachers, basically, the kids are not learning to their potential. I want to give this ONE boy a better chance and place him in a private boarding school for $38 a month for 1 year to see what he can do when given an opportunity.

So if you have a heart for giving this year and want to change a life please consider joining Healing Eyes in making the impossible possible for a boy abandoned and forgotten in Eastern Uganda.

Day of Success and Miracles

Yesterday I was in the hospital for an infection and then today well I woke up to an email from a friend saying they have $2000 for me to buy a car. Then I get home after a long day and find out another $500 is coming from another friend for the car. So in ONE day I have enough to buy a car for Healing Eyes ministry in Uganda. Wow! Prayer does work people!!!!!

So today was a day of progress and smiles. The devil might have tried yesterday to tear my body apart with infections but today God gave me the strength to persevere and adapt to my environment.  The kids were extra happy to see me and are saying my name much more these days. There shyness is wearing off finally. I was able to teach a little english and math with some worksheets I brought along and the kids found them challenging to do. As I graded them they encircled me and nearly crushed me, but it was all in good spirits. What was cute was when I first got to school Jessica asked me right away if I would teach english yet. Ah what a sweetie.

Later when I pulled the ukulele out finally they were so excited and again nearly mulled me by there shear numbers. There is about 257 kids there now, yikes!

The uniforms also came for my 30 needy kids and we had fun handing those out. The quality wasn’t what I expected but the boost in self esteem these kids received was well worth it.

Then we closed off with a nice lunch for the 30 kids that was provided by Gaines Church and another private donor. Such a blessing to see some fruit to our labor.

Tomorrow I hope to bring another 2 kids to the hospital, one is a strange head disease and another is a burned foot. Pray that goes well and we get some answers for these two strong kids

Healing Eyes

It’s time for us to do something

There are children standing here,

Arms outstretched into the sky,
Tears drying on their face.

No Bravery

Houses burnt beyond repair.
The smell of death is in the air.
A woman weeping in despair says,

No Bravery

There are children standing here,
Arms outstretched into the sky,
But no one asks the question why….

Those lyrics are from the song by James Blunt called ‘No Bravery‘. I have seen children with arms in the air and tears stained on there faces. There faces lit up with hope! There faces beaten down by despair.

There ARE children standing here with outstretched arms waiting for someone to do something when they can not.

If not us than Who? There is another song called ‘Do Something‘ by Matthew West. Why doesn’t God do something? He said I did, I CREATED You!

Can you help me, a nobody sitting in a one bedroom apartment with doubts and fears like you? I want to find at least 20 people to give $20 each so I can go back to Africa in October with the school fees for little Billah and William in hand. So I can go to Billah’s mother and say she doesn’t have to be afraid anymore because her youngest child will stay in school, get the needed supplies, and have the prayers of hundreds of people back in the United States. That William will be able to go to boarding school and improve his self confidence in school and not be lost amidst the hundred of other faces in the poor village school. With these 2 kids we can Do Something and begin a transformation in there lives and the other little lives yet to be found on my travels.

Share $20 and I will show YOU what Doing Something can really do!

What a little ‘believing’ can do to lift spirits

Can I tell you a story? Of course I can it’s a blog! 🙂

I am happy..Why? Well I talked to my friend in Uganda again about Billah and found out the money arrived safely at her school and teachers were happy. Billah was happy. And the family was happy. Sooooo I am happy.

It’s small steps really but I’ll take the tiny steps forward over just sitting still and going mad. Now I just need to find the remaining funds to cover the rest of her back school fees and also get little William into school.

No problem!

I have faith and believe it will happen. Somewhere out there someone has $20 just dying to make its way to these 2 kids in Africa and I can’t wait to share with them what an impact they made in a child’s life because of it.

Pay it Forward this Back to School Season

If I said 15,000 Shillings buys a school uniform and that is only $4.41 … 300 shillings buys a broom ($.09) ….

  • Ream of ruled paper – 15,000 ($4.41)
  • Exercise books – 300 ($.09)
  • School bag – 50 ($.01)
  • Plastic blue cup – 50 ($.01)
  • Uniform – 15,000 ($4.41)
  • Grey Socks – 100 ($.03)
  • Broom – 300 ($.09)
  • Toilet Paper – 50 (.01)
  • Scrubber brush – 50 (.01)
  • Small flask – 50 (.01)
  • Mosquito net – 100 ($.03)
  • Pocket money – 20,000 ($5.87)
  • Sweater – 1000 ($.29)

IMG_5167The loose change in your spare drawer can do more than one would think. It’s shocking how far $1 can go to providing comfort to another far away. So as we gear up for Back to School shopping and sales fliers maybe the change left over can make its way to Billah and William hoping to go to school with there shopping list.

I am putting myself out there and asking for 20 people who read this blog or bump into me throughout the month to help fill my shopping cart to Pay it Forward this school season. $20 a person will allow me to pay for supplies and send William to school with his cousin and also ensure Billah doesn’t get kicked out of school for late fees.

and if $20 is too much for you right now than even $10, $5, or $1 can bring a smile to these 2 kids I love dearly.

One child at a time even miles away is possible…

From money raised at the first fundraiser for Healing Eyes I am happy to share we are sponsoring our first child’s education in Uganda. It isn’t much and may seem small but it only takes One to make a difference and start change. So for the next 12 months Healing Eyes will be able to sponsor One child…and who knows maybe the future will bring more needs to our eyes.

Praying for even more abundance and opportunities to open up for Ivan (pictured below) as he starts 5th grade.
