Do you see the forest or the trees?

Vision and the mission get confused a lot as we move forward. How do we make it easy for people to participate in the mission by seeing the vision of the founders. All said and done it comes down to what the heart feels and what the eyes see. Do you feel something missing in your life? Missing in your walk in faith? Do you see a glimmer of excitement and possibilities in what the world offers you?

We have a purpose that’s both too exciting and too big for us to undertake alone and that’s where we need you to trust us with the empty spot in your heart today. That sense of wanting to do more with the resources given to you but not knowing how that sometimes leaves a tinge of sadness on your mood.

Do you see the forest or the trees today?  It’s easy to see a bunch of trees all together to form a forest and miss that one tree standing to the side in need of a little watering. No matter where you go in the world you see the same things. A bunch of trees (people) all trying to be noticed in a crowd. One day a bunch of kids played football for the first time and screamed and yelled and laughed for hours in the hot son. A small good deed but in that kid’s life for ONE day they could escape from the hunger and neglect of their reality. All those small moments add up to a blessed life but none of it is possible without each of us saying yes to the question. That question is can You help put to use your resources today and catch a glimpse of a vision where orphans can feel noticed, neglected can get an hour of attention, and the wounded can get a bandaid put on with a touch of love mixed in.

AnneWoundOne day a girl of about 11 years walked several kilometers to find an adult to clean the gaping hole in her leg that was festering for a month. She had a mother but the same story we hear every day is the mother is too poor to pay for treatments, or the father is too drunk to take notice, or even worse the child was never taught to SEEK help when HURTING.

Healing Eyes was founded out of pain and loss, it has gone through many ups and downs on what it’s trying to accomplish and where it needs to be. Buy land, build a school, take in children, so many earthly things to be done.

One reoccurring theme is to just BE there and SHOW compassion to those hurting even when we don’t have all the answers. Make Love your Aim in life ~1 Corinthians 14:1.

If you feel empty today and want to experience a blessed life please consider giving what God has already given you. We can build something today that’s bigger than us. ~2 Corinthians 9:11

Being frugal to save more money for orphans

There has to be a reason why I have such great internet on this trip compared to past trips. I think its because each day I have important news to share and prayer requests, as well as updated news on ministry needs. Before coming I prayed for God to slow things down because I felt overwhelmed…he did it for awhile but he’s back at it again with speed.

My apartment is still not available, so that’s slow going.

However, the big ticket items are developing now and I am need prayer and support. Tomorrow I go to look at land and I pray all the proper people meet up on time and we get some answers on the accurate acreage and hearts will be open to a cheap price. It has to be cheap because as of now Healing Eyes has only a part of the money needed and needs help to reach it’s goal of $10,000 to pull this crazy impossible scheme off. We want to buy 5 acres of land in eastern Uganda to begin the vision of a school for orphans, to build up a community of widows, and to spread the love and compassion of Jesus Christ.

Another new need has arisen that involves transportation. It has become too expensive to rent a car each visit to Uganda and now God has put into motion the opportunity to buy a car and he has even guided me to people I can trust to make this possible. Now this week we will being searching and I pray we can find the necessary funds to get a vehicle. We need to raise up to $3,000.

Today I have been in my room all day because of having no transportation and the heat was so bad today. To save money I have nibbled on my snacks I brought and tonight I made sure I got some protein by eating pistachio nuts and peanut butter. If I can save a little on money by rationing food then it will be worth it. I just pray I can move tomorrow into my apartment so I can not live out of 2 crates and a suitcase.

Please pray for my ears.. the pain in them keeps returning and the last thing I need is an ear infection plus a visit to a not so good hospital:(

It’s Easy to move a mountain

New look for Healing Eyes and even better direction for the long term goals we hold dear. Where do we stand now?

We stand on the edge of the abyss and now its time to JUMP or walk away. Put all the talk of ‘doing’ something to reality. But HOW?

EASY!

Help purchase 2 acres of land in Eastern Uganda for a village to then build a primary school on. No problem! The way I see it is if God didn’t want us to help this small village he wouldn’t have led me right to there doorstep back in June (Read more…)

So now after returning from the October trip we have more insight as to what we can come alongside the village with. It’s more than building a school, it’s building an ongoing relationship with a community of orphans and widows. Does it scare me?! Yup!

How can you help? I’m glad you asked:)

It’s as easy as Click..Pray…Wait

Vulnerable to rejection and hopeful for the future

What I dislike about following God and his vague approach to mission work.

First…the Rejection and vulnerability I am now facing

Second…Not knowing what the next step is when he says , ‘Go’

Third…and most irritating… The tightness in my chest that comes from a day of worrying and stressing about how will I pull of an event I have never done before and engage strangers in my endeavor by COLD calling businesses for sponsorship. Seriously God! Really! ME! I am an I-N-T-R-O-V-E-R-T not a social butterfly. Ahhhhhhh.

Anyone want to do missions work or run a non-profit? Think twice, it is not glamorous and its quite difficult. Yea you get to travel and see new things and meet strangers but you are the Minority in a world that is foreign to you. I think at this point I would prefer to be in Africa as a foreigner than fundraise in America. Give me a Boda Boda and a taxi full of people all sweaty and grumpy any day! 🙂

Ok…Sorry God for grumbling but I can’t be alone in this feeling. Other missionaries and non-profit owners have to get to a point where they want to crawl in a dark hole and hide for days to make the voices stop. Positive note I have cute pink nails and have submitted a request to DesignOne to donate to the benefit concert, I didn’t pass out when talking to the manager and I got to submit the request online.

I have 3 people so far of the 20 I need to give $20 each for Billah and William’s schooling. Yay!!! That makes it all worth it! The smile on little Billah’s face when I tell her she can go to school and her mother can worry less. A close friend of mine, a very sarcastic and blunt friend, said ‘Sarah, I can say ONE word to you that will make you keep trying….BILLAH’. She was right and I strongly dislike her for her rightness and using my weak spot to not give up.

Pay it Forward this Back to School Season

If I said 15,000 Shillings buys a school uniform and that is only $4.41 … 300 shillings buys a broom ($.09) ….

  • Ream of ruled paper – 15,000 ($4.41)
  • Exercise books – 300 ($.09)
  • School bag – 50 ($.01)
  • Plastic blue cup – 50 ($.01)
  • Uniform – 15,000 ($4.41)
  • Grey Socks – 100 ($.03)
  • Broom – 300 ($.09)
  • Toilet Paper – 50 (.01)
  • Scrubber brush – 50 (.01)
  • Small flask – 50 (.01)
  • Mosquito net – 100 ($.03)
  • Pocket money – 20,000 ($5.87)
  • Sweater – 1000 ($.29)

IMG_5167The loose change in your spare drawer can do more than one would think. It’s shocking how far $1 can go to providing comfort to another far away. So as we gear up for Back to School shopping and sales fliers maybe the change left over can make its way to Billah and William hoping to go to school with there shopping list.

I am putting myself out there and asking for 20 people who read this blog or bump into me throughout the month to help fill my shopping cart to Pay it Forward this school season. $20 a person will allow me to pay for supplies and send William to school with his cousin and also ensure Billah doesn’t get kicked out of school for late fees.

and if $20 is too much for you right now than even $10, $5, or $1 can bring a smile to these 2 kids I love dearly.

Two versions of life

My life has been more abundant since letting go of a way of thinking that didn’t conform to how we are taught to think. When I stopped trying to think about how my life ‘should’ be when fit into a box that others around say it should fit into something magical happened. Take for example these two refrigerators..the one on the left is the year 2012 and the one on the right is 2015….pre-cancer and post-cancer…pre-faith and post-believing….AndySarah…Sarah.

Asking for donations is more than just getting to the goal of $5000 by May…it’s about asking friends and family to build this new life. A life where Sarah works with kids and proves that miracles still do exist in 2015!

I never thought I would be a widow..I never thought I would have kids…I never thought I would live anywhere but Michigan. Yet! Every one of those things has happened in just over a year’s time! So when we thing God works slow, think twice because he can work super fast if we put our minds and hearts to something we believe in.

I BELIEVE IN the Verse….

“Sing, barren woman,
    you who never bore a child;
burst into song, shout for joy,
    you who were never in labor;
because more are the children of the desolate woman
than of her who has a husband,”
says the Lord.

Believe with caution

As I consider where I am now in life and ponder … What the crap happened … I think hmm it’s kinda my fault.

Believe That you will Receive it…and it will be yours! Did I do that? Did I actually back myself into the corner and ‘believe’ this all into existence? Crap! Why doesn’t it put a warning label in the bible versus about the power of believing and to use it with extreme caution. Now What Do I do? Follow Through and do what I believe and keep going crazy?

Now I would swear at this point..several times I wanted to add a few colorful words but than I thought, Crap, I can’t do that anymore, especially when quoting bible verses. Crap Crap Crappity Crap Crap.

Getting closer to my goal of $5,000 by May. Just got a $100 donation that puts me at….$3,655!

No I am not a typical ‘missionary’ nor do I understand why me…but excited to head to Africa again to investigate more what I believe in.

I love Lamp

Last night my lamp fell over and just missed my macbook laptop. It was a heavy lamp, weighted at the base, still haven’t gotten light bulbs for it but it’s been in my bedroom for over a week now. There was no earthquake, there was no wind, it just fell over. Not once has it done that!

Coincidence? That right before it fell over I was grieving Andy and crying over not seeing my husband again? That I was inconsolable over losing my soulmate? Then ‘Thud’ the lamp fell over without hitting my laptop on the floor. I instantly stopped crying and got up to see what fell, since it was dark. Even in death my soulmate tells me to stop crying.

Why do I write about this on my blog that has turned towards Healing and helping others suffering? Not sure…but maybe we all need a smack on the head sometimes to wake us up and see the need around. Countless people are crying in the world. Countless children are waking up to no adult caring that they still exist. Countless mother’s are struggling to feed their kids and Countless others are orphans thrown into the bush out of desperation.

There will always be poor…There will always be need…but there will always be that opportunity to live like today is your last. That life isn’t has stable as we build it up to be with our fail safes we put in place. It can all be gone when a soulmate dies or when your world flips upside down and then what?

Get a lamp thrown at you in the middle of the night? That would get irritating after awhile ha!

Perhaps its something else…that small voice inside that says get up and look at how your day can change if you consider everything is a blessing, even that running tap water that’s safe to drink, or that hot shower you enjoyed this morning, or even yet the bug free floor your barefoot is touching.

Healing Eyes is $1545 away from it’s goal of fully funded for tutoring orphans in Kenya. Yesterday I put the remainder of the amount owed to Commit Ministries in the mail and most of it was my savings account. I would gladly do it again if it meant living with those that need compassion and empathy in their time of need. If my battle with grief can connect with someone thousands of miles away in order to bring Flavor into the world…to be the salt of the earth to those who may not even know there is hope.

Than Screw it..you only live once and its way shorter than we think!

I’ve been glazing over the reality of my situation…most of what I have done over the last year has been from my savings account that Andy left me. Each day I watch it shrink but then I remember Billah and countless others that makes each penny that vanishes worth it. We aren’t supposed to boast of what we do…right….but this blog is about transparency and I need HELP from each of you to keep serving those that I know we all care about but don’t have the freedom to leave their jobs and families to do. I am an imperfect widow, a sinner like everyone else…but I have been blessed with no physical commitments to one place through an undesirable loss.. but help me turn that death of an old life into ‘dying daily’ for someone else…send me where others can’t go!

I will put my little Donate button here for Convenience and Impulse button pushing. But I understand if your skeptical of my motives or perhaps if I am a real person on the internet…or perhaps money is tight. I’ll give an alternative…Consider Praying for funding and an abundance of support, even if you may not believe in God or all this mumbo jumbo (hell I used to think it was a waste of time when everything just kept going wrong)…But just for one second consider the idea that we are all connected and loved by an invisible friend that truly wants us to Prosper and not be Harmed, that love is real, and that for some reason that empty feeling each day is an opportunity to hear that still small voice say, “You are Not Alone”..
